The biggest state in Australia is also one of its least populated. Western Australia covers mostly a third of the whole Australian continent in the western section. Western Australia touches the Northern Territory and South Australia. The state is the second biggest subnational territory globally, after Russia’s Sakha Republic. In fact, the size of Western Australia is double the size of the entire Western Europe.

Western Australia, despite its huge land area, is home to only 10% of the country’s overall population. Western Australia dwellers have been tagged as ‘sandgropers’. This is because in Perth, its capital city, can be found a special insect that is oddly groping on the abundant sand dunes.

The capital city of Western Australia is Perth. This great Western Australian city has its unique characteristics. Perth is touted as among the most isolated cities on the planet. That is because although it is situated in the Australian continent, it is very far from any neighboring cities. In fact, it is odd that Perth is closer to Jakarta, Indonesia and East Timor than it is close to the other important Australian capital cities of Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Adelaide in South Australia is also very distant from it.
